Watches & Warnings

Coastal Hazard Statement
Issued: 13:18 AST Jan. 16, 2017 – National Weather Service

... High rip current risk remains in effect through Tuesday
afternoon...

* breaking waves... between 6 to 8 feet and decreasing.

* Location... northwest through northeast facing beaches of
Puerto Rico.

* Timing... high rip current risk through Tuesday afternoon.

* Impacts... strong currents that can carry even the strongest
swimmers out to sea.

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away
from shore... which occur most often at low spots or breaks in The
Sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins...
jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards... beach patrol
flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current... Yell for help. Remain
calm... do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for
help. If you have to swim out of a rip current... swim parallel to
shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to
swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.

higher gusts.

* Waves/seas... between 5 to 7 feet with occasional seas up to 9
feet.

Precautionary/preparedness actions...

A Small Craft Advisory means that wind speeds of 21 to 33 knots
or seas of 7 feet or greater are expected to produce hazardous
wave conditions to small craft. Inexperienced mariners...
especially those operating smaller vessels should avoid
navigating in these conditions.
