Rain,

I was listening to a new favorite program tonight - Hudson River Sampler on public radio out of Albany, NY - when I heard an old Phil Ochs song I haven't heard in years. I suppose most people would think it a pretty weird birthday song, but if you haven't figured out yet I'm weird... well, what can I say?

Anyhow, I think it's a perfect b'day song, and I send it along with all best wishes for fun, frivolity, and pure enjoyment. Can't celebrate birthdays when we're gone!

A Hogmanay Blessing for You:

May there always be work for your hands to do.
May your purse always hold a coin or two.
May the sun always shine upon your window pane.
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain.
May the hand of a friend always be near to you and
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

Happy New Year 2011, Rain and Aqua!

Many warm wishes for you and yours this Christmas Day.

"We hear the beating of wings over Bethlehem and a light that is not of the sun or of the stars shines in the midnight sky. Let the beauty of the story take away all narrowness, all thought of formal creeds. Let it be remembered as a story that has happened again and again, to men of many different races, that has been expressed through many religions, that has been called by many different names. Time and space and language lay no limitations upon human brotherhood."

~New York Times, 25 December 1937, quoted in Quotations for Special Occasions by Maud van Buren, 1938, published by The H.W. Wilson Company, New York

SURF, Oh my goodness! No, I am not surprised. That country scares the ==== out of me! During our over a month trip to China I listened and I watched and I asked questions. There is no doubt in our mind that their goal is to 'best the USA'. To take over economically and become the number one power in the world. Their militarism is terrifying. I really think that the USA needs to stop being so naive and to stop to hand over our nation! Anyways, this is my personal view based on what I saw and heard.

I have loved Chinese ancient culture, their art, etc. since I started learning about this 'exotic' country. BUT since the Revolution it has become a different nation. What the Communists and the Red Guards did to their own people is horrific, imagine what they will do to other nations given the chance.

Well, isn't it nice to live in this nation and be able to express one's thoughts? God Bless the USA!

Chinese Telecom Company Hijacked 15 Percent Of Internet

NASA, DOD, Senate traffic re-routed through Chinese servers last spring, study finds

For about 18 minutes in April, a Chinese telecommunications company hijacked 15 percent of the Internet, redirecting U.S. government and military traffic through Chinese servers. The misdirection affected NASA, all four branches of the military, the office of the Secretary of Defense and the U.S. Senate.

We don’t yet know what this means — the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, which released report on the incident today, says it is unclear whether it was intentional or just an accident — but at the very least, it’s one more piece of disturbing evidence showing the U.S. is vulnerable to cyberattack.

The hijacking was reported when it first happened, but this is the first acknowledgement that American government sites were affected. Along with the military and organizations like NASA and NOAA, the redirect affected commercial websites like Dell, Yahoo, Microsoft and IBM, according to ABC News, which broke the story this morning.

It’s not clear what happened to the data once it was rerouted through China Telecom, which is denying any hijack of Internet traffic. It could have been a pure technical error that “advertised erroneous network traffic routes that instructed U.S. and other foreign Internet traffic to travel through Chinese servers,” as the report puts it.
Whether or not this was an innocent mistake, it’s clear the capability to reroute huge streams of data could enable malicious activities. Given Chinese entities’ Internet history, this is not good news. Remember last January’s attack on Google, intended to get human rights activists’ e-mail addresses?

From the report: “This level of access could enable surveillance of specific users or sites. It could disrupt a data transaction and prevent a user from establishing a connection with a site. It could even allow a diversion of data to somewhere that the user did not intend.”

Government officials are claiming their traffic was encrypted. so they have nothing to fear. But when members of Congress are “100 percent certain” the U.S. will suffer a cyberattack, incidents like this should sound the alarm.

Wishing you a very happy month of October.

"The gilding of the Indian summer mellowed the pastures far and wide.
The russet woods stood ripe to be stripped, but were yet full of leaf.
The purple of heath-bloom, faded but not withered, tinged the hills...
Fieldhead gardens bore the seal of gentle decay; ... its time of
flowers and even of fruit was over."
- Charlotte Brontë

"Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn."
- Elizabeth Lawrence

HURRICANE IGOR APPROACHES BERMUDA

Hurrricane IGOR continued to weaken as the TRMM satellite passed over on 19 September 2010 at 0144 UTC showing that the hurricane no longer had an eye. IGOR's wind speeds had decreased to about 75 kts (~86 mph) when TRMM collected the TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) data used in the precipitation analysis on the right. IGOR has been predicted to subject Bermuda to tropical storm winds for at least 24 hours. Past locations of IGOR were overlaid on this TRMM satellite view

Category 4 Hurricane Igor: Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO) imagery

As part of the GOES-15 Post Launch Science Test, the satellite was placed into Super Rapid Scan Operations (SRSO) mode on 13 September 2010, providing images as frequently as every 1 minute during the day. GOES-15 0.63 µm visible channel images (above; also available as a QuickTime movie) showed the well-defined eye of Hurricane Igor, with SRSO images during a 4 hour period (from 16:39 – 20:39 UTC). The visible images were brightened a bit after 19:26 UTC to help detect the presence of any mesoscale vortices within the eye.

Dual Hurricanes in the Atlantic

Cameras on the International Space Station show views of Hurricane Julia and Hurricane Igor, both moving west-northwest across the Atlantic on Sept. 14, 2010. At the time the video was captured, Julia was a Category 1 hurricane with winds of about 75 miles an hour, while Igor remained a Category 4 storm with winds 135 miles an hour.

Three Hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean

This image shows Hurricanes Igor, Julia and Karl at 1445Z, September 16. Large and powerful Igor is moving slowly northwestward, Julia is weakening as it moves quickly northwestward over open waters of the eastern Atlantic and Karl has become a hurricane. A Hurricane Warning has been issued for the Gulf Coast of Mexico.

Hurricane Igor Reaches Cat 4 Strength; Will Likely Spare U.S.

Hurricane Igor is currently at Category 4 intensity, with maximum sustained winds at 150 mph. The storm is expected to continue on its northwest path, but turning more north and out to see over the next few days. Though Bermuda may be threatened, most current forecast models do not show the storm impacting the mainland U.S. The image from the visible sensor on-board the GOES-East satellite was taken at 1315z on September 13, 2010

IGOR BECOMIMG A DANGEROUS HURRICANE

Tropical storm IGOR was upgraded by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Florida to a hurricane on Sunday 12 September 2010 at 0300 UTC and has been predicted to strengthen to a major hurricane within a few days. The TRMM satellite passed almost directly above hurricane IGOR a few hours later on Sunday 12 September 2010 at 0504UTC ( 1:04 AM EDT). The TRMM Precipitation Radar (PR) and TRMM Microwave Imager (TMI) data collected with this orbit revealed that IGOR had a well defined circular eye containing bands of heavy rainfall.
