As far as the quality of the iPod picture goes, you can't really tell the difference from any other moon. But you can't do that live, either. Human senses of sight and hearing are logarithmic, so a difference in brightness of a few percent is not that big a deal.
As you say, it's more about the concept than the detail. A beautiful moon is still beautiful, however bright.
I feel like I just got an "ATC" or whatever when a photo is noticed. Ylee commented that my iPod pictures look similar to web cam moon and sun images. I'd imagine the imaging technology is similar. What's this about human eyesight being logarithmic? I'll dig out my dusty "Pickett" slide rule and try to see the tiny numbers.
