Thanks for all of your comments! We've gotten quite used to them being around, but it doesn't stop us from being cautious. I did use a telephoto lens, but the bear wasn't far away. I was on our deck close to the open sliding glass door. He didn't run when I yelled like most of them do, so I ended up banging a metal pot with it's cover to get him to leave. It didn't bother him too much to begin with, but he started running when my banging didn't stop. I would like to be carrying something other than a camera, but here in NJ I'd get arrested if I shot a bear. Several hours later, a mother and 3 cubs crossed in front of my car on our street a few houses away. There really are too many bears in northern NJ!
