A couple of thousand western sandpipers showed up today at Moonstone Beach, after a 3000-mile flight from the shores of northern Alaska. They're a little early; does this mean a short summer and a long winter to come?

We had thousands of them flying over late last night; they must have been flying right above the fog line; I could hear them for about FOUR HOURS without a break..... heading south.

Fantastic picture! Looking at the thumbnail, I thought the birds were a cresting wave.

It means the wind was at their backs. I'm not so sure I'd wanna swim or go into the water where they'd all been doing their business. I bet it's a beautiful sight seeing all these birds.

Terrific photo. Thanks for the info on the long journey of the western sandpipers. A couple of years ago, on a beach north of Pismo, (Avalon, maybe?), we saw a similar scene.

Approximately how long do the western sandpipers hang out in Trinidad, CA?

I also like where you positioned the surfer in the photo. He wasn't the center of attention. The birds were. At the same time, his red surfboard and black surfing whatever add color and interest.

Wanderoo, it was a quick stopover for these guys... They were on the open beach, not their usual location. They most likely ended up another 20 miles south on the mudflats of Humboldt Bay, where food is plentiful.

About Tsurai
Tsurai I'm fortunate enough to live 'way up on the northwestern coast of northern California, an area sometimes referred to as The Humboldt Nation, or the land behind the redwood curtain. Work takes me on the road six months a year, but the rest of the time is mine to surf, kayak, fish, watch birds, and of course take photographs of this remarkable region. Create your own visitor map!
