A 1987 Budapest heat record of a minimum temperature of 23.6 degrees Celsius for the day was broken on the next day, in July 1, 2012 when 24.3 degrees were measured in the early morning hours. The national record was broken in Tata, where the mercury dipped only to 25 degrees in the morning.
Lake Balaton and other lakes in the country had a temperature of 24-25 degrees Celsius when measured.

Temperatures around 33-38 degrees Celsius or even higher in some parts were forecast then for the next few days with ultraviolet B rays hitting extremes at its average level of 8.3.
In 2012/07/01 Hungary's chief medical officer had issued a heat warning effective to midnight of 4 July 2012 with enforced national ambulance services.
