Thank you all for all the comments and emails you have sent me since I put up the first pictures of the baby squirrels that fell out of a tree onto my driveway. I was not able to put them back, tree too high, and the mother had not retrieved them after a couple of hours of waiting, so I have them in the house now and am feeding them kitten formula. I do not, however, give them a very good chance of survival -- just too young, I would estimate no more than a week to ten days old.

That's AWESOME that you are trying to save the little guys Kathy - they at least have a better chance surviving in your care than outside on the drive way . 10+ on the photo AND your efforts to save them :)

Thank you, Tim and Sharon! I could hardly leave them lying after they fell practically in front of my face. I would much have preferred the mother to come get them, but she did not, and I couldn't leave them there any longer. So, I am doing what I can. They are warm and seem to be vigorous; they are taking about 1/2 to 1 cc of formula with each feeding, every hour or two, though I cannot stay up all night with them.

Oh, hi, James; you slipped in while I was typing!

You might be surprised. I once saved a baby mouse as small as these guys with eggnog. He just loved it and wouldn't take anything else. When he was old enough I turned him loose out in our old shed. Never saw him again. Thank you for taking these little guys in and good luck.

P.S. I actually gave him a good dosing of eggnog before going to bed and he made it through the night. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thank you, Colleen! As of now, the middle of the night, they are taking the formula (one more enthusiastically than the other) and both are eliminating, a good sign. I never would have thought of eggnog!

Thank you for adding your comments, Dianne and Elaine! Sadly enough, one baby died during the night, the less vigorous one. The other is still taking its formula, passing urine and feces, and hanging in there. I'm not a very good substitute for a mama squirrel, I guess, just doing what I can.

Try raw goat milk if you can get your hands on some. It would be highly nutritious. Good luck and God bless your kind heart!

Just weighing in and fascinated by the above diaglogue. I will email this to a friend who is involved in wild animal rescue. She is very knowledgeable about pet rats and may even have some suggestions.

Hi Chris
Bless you for attempting it...
Kittens are predators, and would need a different diet, than a foraging herbivore, like a squirrel.
I would suggest goats milk... As goats are (basically) foraging herbivores. And (grazing) cows milk would be too heavy.
Hope that helps.
Good luck!!

All the Darwinians might think you should let nature take its course but I think you will receive blessings for caring for God's little creatures. Sweet shot and a sweet person you are.

Thank you all so much for your comments, advice, and concern! As I write, one baby is surviving and seems to be doing well, keeping warm on a heating pad, taking 1 cc of formula from a syringe every couple of hours, and is eliminating normally. I still don't give it a very good chance, but you never know. It has been an interesting experience regardless how it turns out.

Thank you, Maxine; the one remaining one seems to be doing well, but who knows how it will all turn out? Yes, my hands were very full even BEFORE these little creatures fell into them.

I have *no* idea what makes squirrels tick, but if it helps any, there's that story about the guy walking along the shore picking up "stranded" starfish and tossing them back into the ocean to survive. Someone sees this and asks the guy when he walks past, "You can't possibly help *all* the starfish out here.". He tosses another one back into the water and replies, "Maybe not, but I helped *that* one.".

When we got our Booly Cat, he was about that size, ie, would barely fit across my palm (and had a penchant for urinating in my hand when I'd hold him and "pet" him  :þ ), but he already had hair. Lots of eyedropper-time with milk and some goopy plaster-like formula someone else got, and he's still doing quite fine so many years later, biting my head when I'm sleeping.

"Wow" Now that is tiny and a great capture. I have a squirrel that hangs out around the bird
feeder and drives my dog buddy nut's. I posted
a picture of Bud sailing over the 1190.00 fence
I put up to keep him out of the flowers. He jumps the fence and Mr. Rocky runs up the tree and chatters at him, so it's back over the fence till next time

Thank you, Gene and Bob! Gene, I've heard that starfish story before and it always brings a mist to my eyes.

The remaining squirrel is still doing well three days after it dropped into my life. I have left a message at a wildlife rehab # and am waiting to see if anyone will call back. I've run out pretty much all the contacts I was given; if this one doesn't come through for me, I guess I will just keep the squirrel, for better or worse.

Thank you, Susan and Talkingrock! Susan, maybe a good heart but also a tired body. Talkingrock, I hope it makes it too, though what I will do with it if it does, is not entirely clear right now. In some ways, it would be easier on me if it DIDN'T make it.

Thank you, Kevin! The remaining squirrel is alive and well. I still have not heard anything from the wildlife rehabbers I left a phone message with yesterday, and my inclination right now is just to keep the baby for the time being and continue doing what I'm doing with it, since it seems to be thriving. I have some updated photos I will post after a bit.
