While at an outdoor Memorial Day service after church today, my son spotted this beautiful moth on one of the small dogwood trees in the shade of which we were sitting. It made a better picture than the march of the VFW, raising of the flag, or gun salute.

Thank you, Jean and Pam! It is rare for me to find one of these alive and in good condition. It had just emerged from its cocoon on one of the branches; I didn't take a photo of that specifically (pretty shapeless), but it shows in the background of some of the pics I took of the moth itself. (I might add that the creature peed all over my hand while I was taking these photos! -- about like getting sprayed with a squirt gun.)

LOL Dorothy! No, this is actually quite normal behavior, for newly emerged butterflies and moths to dump metabolic wastes that have been collecting while it was undergoing metamorphosis in the pupa. It's just that with a critter this size, it's more than a few drops!
