Friday's potential record temperatures

Sick of the heat yet? Well, hunker down. The worst is expected on Friday for the East Coast and the Mid-Atlantic, where heat index values could exceed 115°F.

The following lists some of the cities that are forecast to come within 5° of their all-time records.

Boston, Mass.—100°F (forecast) 104°F (record, 1911)

Newark, N.J.—102°F (forecast) 105°F (record, 1966)

Washington D.C.—103°F (forecast) 106°F (record, 1930)

Dulles Airport, Va.—103°F (forecast) 104°F (record, 1988)

Central Park, N.Y.—102°F (forecast) 106°F (record, 1936)

Providence, R.I.—100°F (forecast) 104°F (record, 1975)

Record High Minimum Temperature

Baltimore, Md.—80°F (forecast) 83°F (record, 1925)

Washington D.C.—82°F (forecast) 84°F (record, 1983)

Central Park, N.Y.—81°F (forecast) 84°F (record, 1908)

Norfolk, Va.—80°F (forecast) 84°F (record, 1942)

Philadelphia, Pa.—80°F (forecast) 83°F (record, 2010)

Richmond, Va.—78°F (forecast) 81°F (record, 2011)

It'a gonna be a hot one, no doubt. I look forward to seeing the final tally. However, Richmond just set a high minimum record of 81 just a bit over a week ago: 000 SXUS71 KAKQ 130537 RERRIC RECORD EVENT REPORT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WAKEFIELD, VA 0135 AM EDT WED JUL 13 2011 ...ALL TIME RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE SET AT RICHMOND VA... THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE AT RICHMOND ON TUESDAY JULY 12TH WAS 81 DEGREES. THIS BREAKS THE RECORD HIGH MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 76 DEGREES SET IN 1993. MORE SIGNIFICANTLY...THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN RECORDED HISTORY THAT RICHMOND HAS HAD A MINIMUM TEMPERATURE OF 80 DEGREES OR HIGHER. PRIOR TO TUESDAY...THERE HAVE BEEN 9 OCCURRENCES WHERE THE MINIMUM TEMPERATURE WAS 79 DEGREES AT RICHMOND. IN A FEW CASES...THE MORNING MINIMUM WAS AT OR ABOVE 80 DEGREES...ONLY TO DROP BELOW 80 DEGREES PRIOR TO MIDNIGHT (1AM EDT) THE FOLLOWING EVENING. OFFICIAL DAILY RECORDS ARE RECORDED FROM 1AM EDT TO 1AM EDT (MIDNIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EST). DAILY RECORD KEEPING AT RICHMOND BEGAN IN 1897. (I didn't go snooping; I just remember reading about this one.) I think I diagnosed the problem. The record I had for Richmond previously (79 in 1900) was actually the original date for that record. So that was correct before it got blown away last week. Then last week's new record didn't update in our database. Thanks again.
