As some of you know, I'm a retired person but do disaster relief work about six months of each year. Because of that I find myself spending time in new places and new communities on a regular basis. The work isn't glamorous and sometimes it seems like I'm making no progress at all in making things better.

There are thousands of relief workers just like me -behind the scenes, doing their work out of the spotlight, many of them like me closer to 70 than 60 years old.As I grow older I look back at a lot of small actions and feel satisfied that I did what I could.

The picture was taken of a terrific carved wooden fish in the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. In that museum is a moving memorial to the 136 fishermen who died in the storms of 1926 and 1927. Without accurate weathercasting, they set out for Sable Island and were caught by storms. 136 of them died, virtually at least one man from every household in the town. It seems to me that blog lurkers and users share a strong interest in and fascination (or maybe even obsession) with weather, and are willing to share their views and help educate other bloggers. Glad to be on board with such good company.
