At some point the little guys and gals are going to have to take over and start making smart, real time, fiscally responsible decisions. Not only in relief efforts, but in all other aspects of our economy and government as well.
On Saturday December 20th Portlight Strategies and Churches of Christ Disaster Response Team will be providing a Christmas party and presents for the residents of Bridge City, Tx. The festivities will begin at 4pm CST and last until 8pm. There will be a traditional Christmas dinner, presents for the children, Santa, DJ, activities, and much more. This community was devastated by Hurricane Ike's massive storm surge and they will have a long road to recovery. There were only 14 homes in this community of over 8,000 that did not sustain significant damage from Ike. Hopefully this party will help bring a little bit holiday cheer in the trying times this community is facing. Join us via the live webcam and chat room!
Portlight would like to thank all of the people that took part in the Honor Walk which helped raise funds to provide the party. Without you none of this would have been possible. As we move forward we desperately need to replenish funds that were exhausted on Ike relief. Portlight is currently planning a Walk and Roll for Disaster Relief which will take place in the spring. This is where we need YOUR HELP; we are looking for volunteers to help coordinate this walk in 40 cities. If you are interested in being a coordinator in your area please contact john@portlight.org. We will provide all coordinators with press material, planning material, and any other items that are needed. These funds will be utilized to help us prepare to better respond in the event of future disasters as well as continue to provide support to the outlying areas impacted by Hurricane Ike. PLEASE STEP UP AND HELP US MAKE THIS A HUGE EVENT!
Help support the efforts of Portlight Strategies Disaster Relief
As Portlight moves forward we are working diligently to build a sustainable effort that will be able to help the forgotten people for years to come. Part of this effort includes the monthly donor program which will be critical to sustaining our current momentum. Please consider what you can give on a monthly basis. To engage in this program, simply donate through PayPal and in the comments section please state Monthly donation commitment OR mail a check to the address below and designate for Monthly donation program. You're help in sustaining this effort is not only desperately needed, but also greatly appreciated.

All funds will be transparently accounted for in a separate dedicated account and posted on Pat's blog and are a matter of public record through the organizations IRS Form 990 which can be reviewed at Charity Navigator or the IRS. For the last 6 years over 90% of all donated funds to this group have gone to direct program services. With a little help, StormJunkie.com is pleased to announce the advent of 3d-LIIVIDâ„¢ radar. This product utilizes Level II WSR-88D radar data to produce three dimensional views of storms. Please stop by and check out a 3d-LIIVID isosurface loop from Dolly making landfall. A look through the user manual and the FAQ will give you a better understanding of what 3d-LIIVID is, and how it works. We have also just added several new overlays including a 45dbz isosurface, county lines, and US highways.
As always, we really look forward to hearing everyone's feedback as it will help us to continue to improve 3d-LIIVID.
The beginning of the help video index can now be found on StormJunkie.com. Currently there are series on The spaghetti models, the FSU Experimental Forecast page, and the QuickSCAT page. Look for more video series in the near future as well as some other neat additions to the site coming soon.
The intent for StormJunkie.com is to provide access to some of the best tropical and weather tracking information on the web. As hobbyists we truly appreciate the value of the wealth of information available on the internet. We are still in the process of learning how to read and interpret the wealth of maps and data available. That said; part of the learning process is to find the many sites out there, learn to navigate them, and then get a basic understanding of the information provided. Hopefully this site can help speed that process up. In conjunction with wanting fast easy access to these links from any computer, the site was also designed to foster a learning environment. Links and information on models, marine data, wind data, imagery, weather learning, and much more can be found here. Make sure you check out the Wilma videos provided by weatherboyfsu and CyberWolf. I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of the folks that have used the site, helped with the site, or offered suggestions. That said, this site is meant to be useful to all. If there is anything that you feel is missing or could be improved upon, please let me know!
I love grass roots efforts. Think that yesterday's party was the best!!! Thanks for the screen capture baja. Wish I could have stayed around for live feed.

I keep trying to come up with the right superlatives to describe my feelings about yesterday's party. None of them are quite right.
I'm so deeply grateful to be part of this loving, caring group of folks who have managed to accomplish so much so quickly. My heart and head are bursting with all sorts of thoughts, feelings, and emotions but I'll have to sort through them once I thaw out, lol. It was in the mid-70s all weekend in TX. It's -5 here right now (real temp, not wind chill) with 30mph wind gusts.
I'm so glad so many of you were able to be there via web cam. I didn't get to see much of the discussion but I could tell there were lots of people in the room. From the comments here and on Emmy's blog (who is simply WUnderful!) it sounds like you all had a good time at the party too.
I'm with surfmom -- parties are awesome, and this one was no exception.
Kudos to everyone who walked, contributed, planned, watched, or participated in any other way. It was ALL good!

I had received several inquiries concerning the Christmas Party and Honor Walk, so here are preliminary figures, given to me from Portlight. Please note again that this is preliminary, the final tallies have not come in, but this should be fairly accurate.
Funds Received: $4200...which I think is closer now to $4500
Expenditures are (or will be) :
$2500 to Churches of Christ (Gifts for the children that Santa gave out) $500 for the pre-paid Visa cards (these were given to adults at the party by drawing) $250 for conference calls and other calls $500 for crafts, etc $150 DJ
....plus I expect a few extraneous bills to come in....any surplus will be sent to Churches of Christ

Quoting EmmyRose: IL - I so enjoyed meeting you, working with you and wrangling with them lights that swag.. THANK YOU from everyone in Texas - Wheres my coffee???????
heheheh! Those lights were a GREAT idea!!! But as with many of my great ideas... I hope the family who receives them are the patient type.
As to your coffee? It wasn't wet enough on the ground, I felt compelled to donate more moisture to the turf. Besides, caffeine isn't good for you at night, I was just thinking of your health and well-being. Yeah, that's it!

Quoting Raysfan70: {{IL}} It was WUnderful to put a face to a name. Glad you made it home. Tried to talk the hubby to go north for Christmas but he says it's to COLD.
hi Rays! I think hubby may have a valid point. Those 70 degree temps were kinda nice. But, Hold On... we're having a heat wave today. It's all the way up to 8 degrees on the way to 11. Maybe he'll reconsider!

In late Februaruy of this year I was diagnosed with Stage 2 melanoma...it was a black spot about an inch long and a half inch wide on my lower left eyelid...
The first surgery (to remove the cancer) was in March, the week before my 49th birthday...the second (to begin rebuilding the eyelid) was later the same month...the final surgery (to finish the eyelid work) was in late August..two and a half weeks before Ike hit...
so...
I spent a good portion of this year dealing with facing fifty...fearing death...anger with God...questioning my faith....wondering if I'd spent too much of my life building my financial pile and not enough serving others...generally pondering some pretty deep issues...
suffice it to say: much of this year was spent in physical, spiritual, and emotional agony...
the reaction of this community after Ike (described in the guest blog Dr. Masters was kind enough to let me write) paid it all off for me...
my anger toward God was resolved....clarity of priorities became obvious...my faith was restored...and strengthened...
and I have this community to thank for it all....
Merry Christmas everybody

We hear the beating of wings over Bethlehem and a light that is not of the sun or of the stars shines in the midnight sky. Let the beauty of the story take away all narrowness, all thought of formal creeds. Let it be remembered as a story that has happened again and again, to men of many different races, that has been expressed through many religions, that has been called by many different names. Time and space and language lay no limitations upon human brotherhood.
