Erractic Movement of NIDA

Erratic Movement of NIDA

Nida continues to be and pardon my language, a pain in the butt!! This storm has shifted direction of movement from NE to now W in the past 24 hours. Plus its strength has only weakened slightly to 110kts still leaving at a Super Typhoon Strength. The winds are creating seas up to 35ft near the core! That is enough to take down most large ships. The eye is still very vivid and remains approximately 50nm across. It looks like I may just sit near its current location and fill itself from below due to lack of exhaust over the next 72 hours.

The Typhoon continues to sit in between two ridges shown on the 500mb model analysis from GFS witch is agreeing better with current and past conditions than NOGAPS. This and the ZONAL flow with the PFJ to the north are keeping the storm in its stationary position 380 NM south of IWO TO. For the past 12 hours winds on the Island have remained below 15 knots and if the system continues to drift west these winds should remain steady.

(Picture I took of IWO TO (IWO JIMA) in September.)

An increase in shear 48 to 72 hours out will start to finally knock the tops of NIDA, thus weakening it’s exhaust as mentioned above and the typhoon should quickly fill and weaken, then 96 hours out it will likely finally be picked up by the PFJ and move quickly off to the NE. FYI this could spell some weather for the NW U.S by the early next week.

Also was NITA a record breaker? The answer is no, the official lowest reading via JTWC was 990mb, that keeps it 10mb above Typhoon Tip, yet it still give it a run for it’s money.
