Hello WU Friends:
The Best of WP monthly blog continues with pics submitted in September going back to 2004. I love the transition into Fall and this month we start of with one of the all-time great Fall shots - Oxbow Bend by ICanonit.
Next we enjoy the amazing Fire Tornado by Photo5150. And even though tj1959 had another excellent pic featured in the One Million blog, the highest rated pic by this photog is Harvest Moon.
I'll post the first 20 today and more later this weekend. I hope we'll get many behind the pic stories, so check back once in a while. And if you see a few you really like, add a comment with the new system - some great shots have no comments yet.
This month's best (2009) will be added in early October. Thanks for stopping by.
Mitch

I was covering the fire action at the Day fire in Castaic CA, and had this fire tonado form from the heat and wind from the fire right in front of me!...Fire is now 27,500 acres+ and now has been burning for 10 days.

Another perspective of the squall line moving through our area from Hurricane Frances.
This is the classic view from the Rockpile at Moraine Lake. It is called the $20 view b/c it once graced the backside of a Canadian twenty dollar bill!
Taken on Lopez Island part of the San Juan Islands near Seattle.
It was a very foggy morning, and the spider webs were loaded!
Taken last night (Sept 30) just South of Fairbanks Alaska at sunset. This huge Aurora was the result of a solar event a few hours earlier. The display lasted from sunset to 11:pm when clouds moved in. Every 20 minutes a new Aurora would emerge. You can easily see the Big Dipper in the middle. Visit my Wunderground folder and my web site www.northpolegallery.com for more Aurora pictures.
I tried shooting the andromeda galaxy a week ago but was pretty unhappy with the results, the skies were quite soupy that night, made for a less than satisfying image. Last night I had perfect skies here in the northeast to shoot our sister galaxy, the Andromeda Galaxy. This galaxy is 2.3 million light years away and located directly overhead during the autumn months on the border of the constellations pegasus and Andromeda. This is an image stack of 15 6 minute exposures layered in photoshop. Shot with a modified canon 350d and Takahashi e-160 telescope, ISO800, no noise reduction.
Fall 2008 --- FINALLY!!! After going to Maroon Bells last year and the year before, we finally got there when there was blue sky AND when the Aspens were about at there peak. Besides that I saw my first Columbine (Our State Flower), and then on the way home we stopped and looked/took pictures of stars. It was a really fun day!! More to come later.
This dust storm rolled over the tops of the mountains and just kept right on going.

This is a panarama I took of the eye of Ivan as we made our last pass through the eye of the storm just after sunrise Sept. 9th. The eye at this point measured 9 miles in diameter. We had made a total of 5 passes through the eye on this flight and measured flight level winds of 162 knots. One of the dropsondes we launched measured 187 knots(215 mph) in the north eyewall about 200 meters above the surface. Based on that data, NHC upgraded Ivan to a catagory 5 storm for a time.
Colors begin to accent the greenery. Colors change almost hourly!
This is a picture of a storm at least 40 miles away moving towards AR on Sept. 30th.
Hope at the end of the storm (

This photo was taken shortly after several days of rain in which over 30 inches of rain fell on the island.
A very clear night here in Colorado so took the opportunity to take some shots of our neighbor galaxy. Combined fifteen 55 sec shots to make this image.
The Bridge is the largest single span steel arch bridge in the western hemisphere. It measures 876 ft. from the bridge to the bottom of the gorge.

Lighthouse in the Inside Passage near Bella Bella, British Columbia
Well worth the 10 minute walk off the main track (Cass Saddle Track) to see this beautiful view.
This was one of two of the most incredible New Mexico sunsets I've seen. I missed photographing the one last year which was just as spectacular but I got it this year. Just as the sun set, a huge storm moved in. I almost didn't go to shoot it, figuring it would be obscured.
Luckily, I had nothing better to do and this is what I was faced with, followed by an intense lightning storm
Sept. 18, 2006 - The fall colors are in their glory as shown by this reflection on a sunny day along the Chena River near Fairbanks. It is a little unusual for the river to be as glassy smooth as this. Using a polarizing filter which really helps with shots involving water, clouds, rainbows, and the like.
Mount Shasta from Lake Siskiyou this morning. The mountain itself never changes, but the snow, light, clouds and sky do and every time I see it I feel like it's for the first time.
After numerous shots, I managed to catch Heceta Head lighthouse with its light on. The lighthouse was built in 1894 and its beam is visible for 21 miles making it the strongest light on the Oregon Coast, Yachats, Or
THANK YOU TO THE GEORGIA SEA TURTLE CENTER (
Willow13)
This is Night Watch, a sub-adult Loggerhead Sea Turtle. She was anemic and had a virus when she came to the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to be treated. Now she is well and returning to her ocean home. She delighted the crowd when she took a deep breath of the fresh ocean air and opened her mouth real wide in what seemed to be a great big belly laugh :D
The setting sun created some bright colors
This is a section of the Bald River falls that caught my eye.
Look what I found sitting on my feeder!
Wow! This was taken from Ester Dome Road in Fairbanks Alaska at about 1am on the 16th of September, 2005! Due to a particularly wicked CME interacting with our magnetosphere (with the IMF in perfect array), this is what occured! This picture was not touched up, save for a tad in contrast/brightness; you can see the stars are the normal color (white). Otherwise, this is exactly what I saw! Between the clouds reflecting the light from the city of Fairbanks, and the blues, purples, yellows, greens or oranges from the Aurorae, this was the most heart-stopping moment i've had in Fairbanks so far (which, it turns out, is saying alot!) I'll be developing some new pics soon of the event two nights ago! They just keep getting better! I've never seen so much color in one display!

This is my favorite pic for the day.
The cattle stood quietly in the gentle fog and the early morning glow that comes just before sunrise....
Autumn At Summit Lake (
sypond)
Taken at Summit Lake on the Kenai Peninsula, Alaska. It was a beautiful autumn day with very little wind and few clouds. We were on our way to Anchorage when this photo was taken.

I owe it all to WU visible Sat. Images.
This big old St. Bernard (I think??) was just the friendliest dog. He was just waiting for his master sitting out in an old Dodge pickup. I happened to have my camera with me.

You've scored a perfect 10 once again with
these glorious pic selections! Well worth the wait!

Have a great day!

The picture you picked "Heavy lace" is a definite favorite of mine. I was by a lakeside on a foggy morning, when the sun suddenly broke through...It was a wonderland of dew pearls everwhere. The amount of dew stuck on the webs was so great that they were all sagging with the weight, revealing their amazing geometric engineering. In this photo I tried to use the DOF to render the threedimentional effect. I loved the good light on each droplet. Thanks again!
Thanks again...
Tim
Thanks for including my "Enjoying blue sky" photo into this great photo collection.
This is a formation consisting of 9 aircrafts belonging to the Italian Air Force Aerobatics Display team called "Frecce Tricolori". It is one of the best aerobatics team in the world, they are real professionals. During the display they use a very nice bright red-white-green smokes as these are colors of the Italia flag. Their dynamics aerobatics performance is accompanied by excellent music and the team speaker commentary is also inseparable part of their excellent show.
You can see more info regarding this outstanding aerobatic team at address:

This photo was taken during the Czech International Air Fest airshow taking place in Czech republic at Brno Airport in September 2006.
Thank you for selecting "STREAK IN THE SUBDIVISION" as a photo that you enjoyed.
The photo was taken after I was alerted by my husband that there was lighting flashing outside. I ran outside in pjs and started shooting. I was on a curb, so the shot was originally (as you see) somewhat crooked in my haste!
The storm was in Arkansas....we were in Tulsa. That is at least an hour away. There was not a sound with this thunderhead, just the visual show.
It was a once in a lifetime shot!!
Thanks again!!

I do enjoy gaining a little more insight into the stories behind some of the best pics on WU.

Yes, Randy and I for one and glad to see this shot from inside the eye of Ivan.

I've never seen it quite this dramatic, so I'm glad you were there.
tj1959 modestly commented:
Not much of a story to tell other then I knew it would be a full moon and I looked on W.U. to see what time it would rise.
Yes, but you also composed a wonderful shot with the seagull as a an added feature.
Nice to hear from Maxa who shares a variety of great shots. This might not be her favorite subject but it's an eyecatching photo. And thanks for helping me understand the significance of the three colors -

MomentzNMemeoriez claims her lightning pic was a -once in a lifetime shot!!
Maybe - but living where you do you'll have other opportunities and I hope we'll see some more.
ICanonit commented on what may be the highest rated Fall color shou on WU:
This classic shot can be captured in the coming weeks as the colors peak near the end of this month.
And yes, we'll see a similar shot by another photog in next month's blog.

My husband and I arrived at the bridge while it was encasted in fog and waited for the fog to "burn" off. The day was glorious and this is one of my favorite photos of the day.
We're glad you waited and shared part of that great day with us.
And all the way from New Zealand Kiwi78 commented on Mirror Tarn:
It was a short detour off the main track, but it was well worth it. Such a beautiful serene spot.
Your detour was well worth it for us too so we could enjoy that most marvelous spot.
Thanks to all these photogs for sharing. And thanks to masshysteria, idzrvit and BajaALemt for stopping by.
I'll be adding a few more in the next couple of days so check in again. And remeber, many of these shots have few or no comments with the new format. So click on the pic and send a note.
Thanks,
Mitch
"I took this photo one morning near Fairbanks where I work on a stern wheel riverboat. Many fall days are like this on the Chena River which has very little current at this time of year and the waters are often glassy like this early in the day. I have seen this same view frequently but decided not to shoot it, yet again, believing this is as good as it gets The clouds were perfect, the trees were at their peak. The Chena River is a small drainage which passes through Fairbanks, starting as a hot springs about 50 miles up stream. The fall colors in Interior Alaska are mostly gold and yellow from the birch and aspen trees. I used a polarizing filter on my Canon S1 SI, and virtually no "tweaking" with my photo editor (iPhoto). I applaud this website and the positive attitude it "reflects". Travel well, be well."

As only a thought and suggestion in your search for your October picture postings, I am posting a link to a possible former member (?) of Wunderground (Wildjack) who in 2007 uploaded some beautiful fall foliage pics all around New England. Thought you might enjoy them as well ... even if it's just to peruse.
All my best,
Mass.
