There is a ring of storms around Wilburton or Robbers Cave State Park 65 miles NW of here. One is heading N, another NE, and the third SE marked red for heavy rain; the general direction moving NE into N McCurtain County. These storms formed ahead of the cold front.

The outbreak into beauty which Nature makes at the end of April and beginning of May excites so joyful and admiring a feeling in the human breast, that there is no wonder the event should have at all times been celebrated in some way. The first emotion is a desire to seize some part of that profusion of flower and blossom which spreads around us, to set it up in decorative fashion, pay it a sort of homage, and let the pleasure it excites find expression in dance and song.

The winds of change are blowing over the plains with a strong cold front pushing across northwest kn and the far western panhandles of OK/TX. This front will break the pattern of late with additional clouds and showers and thunderstorms for a nice change. As is generally the case this time of year with a cold front severe weather is a possibility. Day one from Storm Prediction Center runs across southeast OK by this time tomorrow [5 am Monday] and here is our highest probability of precipitation in the short term.

3pm update:
A Mesoscale Convective Vortex should also be making its way east-northeast into the region tonight. 
Definitions: This MCV is a low-pressure center within an MesoscaleConvective System (MCS) that pulls winds into a circling pattern, or vortex.  A MCS is a complex of thunderstorms which becomes organized on a scale larger than the individual thunderstorms, and normally persists for several hours or more. On a satellite the MCV resembles a hurricane.  Look at the most recent infrared satellite map and you may see a MCV developing where the two orange blobs appear near Nacogdoches and Huntsville, TX.

NMOG, NMHC, or THC—types of carbon-containing compounds, including hydrocarbons
NOx—Oxides of Nitrogen, which combine with hydrocarbons to create smog
PM—Particulate Matter, tiny particles of solid matter that lodge in the lungs and deposit on buildings
CO—Carbon Monoxide, a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas
HCHO—Formaldehyde, a lung irritant and carcinogen


These particles come in many sizes and shapes and can be made up of hundreds of different chemicals. Some particles, known as primary particles are emitted directly from a source, such as construction sites, unpaved roads, fields, smokestacks or fires. Others form in complicated reactions in the atmosphere of chemicals such as sulfur dioxides and nitrogen oxides that are emitted from power plants, industries and automobiles. These particles, known as secondary particles, make up most of the fine particle pollution in the country.


• Fine particles are easily inhaled deep into the lungs where they may accumulate, react, be cleared or absorbed.

Scientific studies have linked particle pollution, especially fine particles, with a series of significant health problems:

•  Increased respiratory symptoms, such as irritation of the airways, coughing, or difficulty breathing
for example:

•  decreased lung function;
•  aggravated asthma;
•  development of chronic bronchitis;
•  irregular heartbeat;
•  nonfatal heart attacks 
•  premature death in people with heart or lung disease.


Particle pollution can cause


•  coughing, wheezing, and decreased lung function even in otherwise healthy children and adults.
