.Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see that yesterday afternoon the Sonoran side was a hotbed of thunderbumper activity. They continued until about midnight with a few cells crossing the Fence into SW Arizona.
All this thunderbumper activity brought mostly high whispys over the central and southern Sea in the afternoon.
At 9pm last night there was one cell that almost crossed the entire central Sea before breaking up. Since midnight most have dissipated. This morning there is considerable cloudiness in the entire Sea and over the mainland. The pattern has been that these clouds drift NW so my guess would be that we see cloudiness all this morning perhaps into the afternoon. We’ll see?
Looking south the cape area and south along the Mexican Riviera are also overcast this morning.
Things are starting to heat up in our Tropical Kitchen this morning. Yesterday morning. I said that the tropical depression would turn into tropical storm Hector…WRONG! I misspoke my self. The name is Gilma. The gazillion dollar computers at the National Hurricane Center said there was little chance Gilma reaching hurricane status. They were wrong! This morning there is a very good chance that sister Gilma will reach hurricane status probably this morning. This image is starting to show strong circulation. It is still forecast to move NW a bit then meander along 20W for the rest of it’s life span. So on the front burner we have Gilma.
On one of the back burners we have a low pressure system that has popped up abut 460 miles SSW of Acapulco over night. This is in hurricane alley and there is a pretty good chance that this will become a tropical depression within the next 48 hours.
Another item on the back burner is further south and is currently a low embedded in the ITCZ/Monsoon trough. There is no deep convection near the center of the low however development of this system is possible over the next couple of days and become our next tropical depression.
I suspect it would be prudent to say that the 2012 hurricane season is now underway.
Taking a peak over into the Caribbean we have himicane Ernesto moving across the Yucatan peninsula this morning. When it reaches open water tomorrow it will create a minor wind event in the Tehuantepec isthmus with winds to around 24 knots for around 24 hours.
Well, that’s what’s going on in our hood so looking now for the hot news along the west coast of America.
Hot hot hot! Is the big news. The high pressure ridge is firmly engraved in the western conus this morning and still building. Temperatures will soar until the end of the week when the high finally starts to weaken over the weekend. Until then Portland will see a high of 89, California foothills 98. California inland valleys 103, Redding 108.
In southern California they will be looking at highs in the 90s.
Over in the southwest Tucson 108 and Yuma always the hot spot will see a scorching 115 until the weekend.
The high pressure has put the lid on the monsoon until early next week howver there is still enough moisture in the region to bring showers and thunderbumper to the higher elevations for the rest of the week. Cells moving up from Sonora during the late afternoons and evening hours will bring possible showers close to the Fence.
That’s what is going on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence the moderate southerlies will continue for the 3-day forecast period. We should see increased thunderbumper activity over in Sonora in the afternoons. With high pressue keeping the lid on the monsoon these storms will not have the strong south-north flow and will tend to wander out into the Sea so I’d expect to see more activity in the Sea until this weekend so keep a wary eye to the east in the evening hours.
Even though the predominate wind flow is southern a great deal of the winds will be thermally driven in the afternoon. For example the central Sea along the Baja side has E winds forecast today. That will probably be the case for most of the coast of the central Sea however inside the Concepción Bay I can almost guarantee that the afternoon winds will be from the SE.
Temperatures today will be in the mid to high 90s
