Voice to Text---
.Looking down into the Sea this morning I can see we have had another day of cloudless skies over the Sea of Cortez.
Looking over to the west side of the Baja peninsula it looks like a fairly heavy fog bank hugs the coast from Cabo Falso south to southern California this morning. This image is indicating the marine layer extending inland quite a ways the length of the peninsula.
Looking south to the Mexican Riviera I can see that around Manzanillo there is a narrow band of clouds moving in from the Pacific.
Looking further south to the Gulf of Tehuantepec where I can see a very tall big honk’n thunderbumper moving into the Gulf at 5am. This not only blankets the Gulf it extends several hindered miles to the west and to the south over Guatemala. I would not like to under this honker.
Looking now at the ITCZ/Monsoon trough that is snaking along 10N this morning. That low that has been embedded in the zone for the past 4 days was just designated invest 93 early this morning. This image is showing a heavy concentration of clouds around this low and the forecast is for this area to probably become a tropical depression within the next 24-36 hours. The National Hurricane Center gives is 50% chance of becoming cyclonic over the same time frame.
If this does become a named storm her name will be Carlotta. The computer models are showing its potential track for this system to continue moving west with very little northward movement so it looks like there is little or no danger to the Baja peninsula from this system.
OK, that’s what is cooking in our tropical kitchen this morning. Looking now north to the west coast of America where high pressure is building in from the west.
In Northern California’s coastal areas it will remain cool with coastal fog lasting until mid morning. Inland valleys will begin a warming trend. The Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys will be in the high 90s this rest of the week.
Southern California will continue to see June Gloom along the coast with inland regions warming up to the mid 80s and low 90s during the week.
Looking now over to the southwest where due to the passing of a front to the north it will again be gusterly today but not quite as much as yesterday. Yesterday in the Herford area that were seeing gusts to 30 mph and this morning at 3am they were still seeing gusts to 28. Twenty-five hundred ft lower in Tucson their gusts were in the 20 mph ranges yesterday afternoon. It will continue to be very dry in the southwest with daytime highs over the lower deserts peaking around 110 by next Wednesday.
I’ve been mentioning the monsoon season for Arizona for a few days now and I had an email asking if I was joking or does Arizona actually have a monsoon season. The answer is yes. Arizona does have a monsoon season.
During the winter time, the primary wind flow in Arizona is from the west or northwest—from California and Nevada. As we move into the summer, the winds shift to a southerly or southeasterly direction. Moisture streams northward from the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and northward up the Sierra Madra Occidentals mountain range on the mainland into Arizona.
The other factor is a thermal low that heats up over the California deserts. Most of the time this thermal low shows up over the Yuma area like it did this morning. The results: Heavy thunderbumper in the afternoons and evenings.
As I was researching this I wanted to know what kicked off the monsoon season. The answer was the “Captain Ron answer”, “No body knows”.
As a sidebar: This thermal low over Yuma is the magnet that brings southern winds up the Sea of Cortez in the summer. The summer southerly winds normally end in late October. By the way, apparently the term "monsoons" as in "when the monsoons arrive ..." is a meteorological no-no. There is no such beast. The word should be used in the same manner that "summer" is used. Therefore, the proper terminology is "monsoon thunderstorms" not "monsoons”.
So endity Arizona Monsoon 101 and that is what is gong on to the north of us. Back on this side of the Fence our very pleasant summer continues.
Today and tomorrow the Sea will see moderate southerlies then on Tuesday the moderate winds swing to the north.
The southern see will continue to see light southerlies over the 3-day forecast period.
Temperatures should be a few degrees higher than yesterday with a few breaking the century mark. Most will be in the mid to high 90s this afternoon.
