DEBATE ON GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is my continuing blog on global warming. If you are new visitor, please look at last couple of blog entrys also on global warming!!!!

"There are so many arguments proving & disputing global warming that people can't seem to agree completly on it. But for all the preperations that we make for hurricanes & other disasters, what do we have to lose if we prepare for global warming as if the worst might come true?
The answer is pure common sense. We should try to eliminate the variables that cause global warming instead of just arguing about it. It's like a hurricane- if we prepare for the worst, it can only save lives & money. If it does not come, no one will have been hurt & we may even have a healthier Earth."

Madagascar?? Wikipedia lists 3 storms only 1 storm that was severe, a cat 5 storm. Curious that the earliest date is 1989....

Something like 95% of climate scientists believe that human-caused global warming is a significant factor in current warming temperatures. About 50% of the people on this blog, probably the ones benefitting from the current system, don't believe in it. Hmm, do i believe some random person from this blog, or 95% of all scientists (as well as my own observations).
Seriously people, if you went to 100 doctors and 95 of them said you had a bacterial infection and needed antibiotics, but then went out in the street and asked 100 random people what was wrong with me and 90 of them said an evil unicorn was living in your leg and making it hurt and you needed to eat magical rhino horn powder to cure yourself, are you going to take the magical horn powder or the penicillin? I think some of you would take the unicorn power because you don't 'trust' the 'evil liberal doctors' who spent all their lives studying medicine and were clearly corrupted by the liberal media (such as peer-reviewed journals).
if most scientists are liberals, it isn't because they are indoctrinated by some weird media (it is a scientist's job to be subjective). it is because the conservative views are stupid, and most scientists are smart, and can figure that out. The only smart people who are conservatives are those who know they are getting something out of it and don't care about the consequences. Or people who are just scared.

You think ALL these statements coming out in the I.P.C.C. report are coming from data that is 5% accurate?? C'mon , highly unlikely lol
Can you please tell me, the idiot, what the accronym IPCC means
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was established in the 1980s as a mechanism for the periodic assessment of the status of climate change science in a way that was accessible and understandable by private and public sector decision makers.
The IPCC does not do scientific research itself, but builds its assessments on peer-reviewed and published scientific papers. Several thousand scientists from around the world contribute to the process. IPCC has reported previously in 1990, 1996 and 2001.
Its Fourth Assessment Report will appear this year in three parts. The first, to be released today, deals with the underpinning science of the climate system and climate change (Working Group I of the IPCC). A second part will appear in April and deal with impacts of climate change (Working Group II) and a third part on mitigation (Working Group III), methods and approaches to the reduction of emissions of greenhouse gases, will be released in May.
in Belgium, Al Gore is looked upon as a hero, a superman, the only man in the world who can save the planet.
Thaaaat's a stretch LMAO!!!!! He is trying to make a difference though, I will give him that.
1) the sun;
2) humanity's greenhouse gas emissions.
Main argument among serious researchers is how much to attribute to each cause. Models and available information suggest most warming is due to greenhouse gases, and estimates of the solar contribution range from <10% to an extreme figure of 36%..
THANX Randrewl, another great article. Pulled that out of it. I never thought of that.....
Climate experts hit back after being accused of overstating the problem

Global warming is a "weapon of mass destruction", one of Britain and the world's top climatologists said yesterday.
Sir John Houghton, former director-general of the Meteorological Office and chairman of the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution, entered the debate over the seriousness of climate change after two meteorologists were reported as saying that "some scientists have been guilty of overplaying the available evidence". He said he agreed with the Government's chief scientist, Professor Sir David King, that it posed a greater threat than terrorism.
The comments of the two meteorologists, Professor Paul Hardaker and Professor Chris Collier, both of the Royal Meteorological Society - billed on Radio 4 as "leading experts on climate change" - threatened to revive the row over the scientific view of global warming after the broadcasting of Channel 4's polemic The Great Global Warming Swindle 10 days ago, which took issue with the view set out in Al Gore's film An Inconvenient Truth.
One of the most distinguished scientists featured in it, the oceanographer Professor Carl Wunsch of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says he has registered a formal complaint with Ofcom.
Sir John says he agrees "we must not exaggerate the evidence, and if anything must underplay it". But he adds the evidence of serious climate change is now "very substantial".
Sceptics charge that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change exaggerates the dangers. But Sir John, as one of the founders of the panel, says that it had "deliberately underestimated the problem".
He says the latest projections of the floods and droughts that will result from the heating of the globe are "frightening". And he adds that the 20,000 deaths caused by the 2003 heatwave in Europe justify the view that it is more dangerous than terrorism.
Some confusion surrounded the views of the RMS scientists yesterday after Prof Hardaker told the IoS that he could not think of a case where a scientist had overstated the position. He did however mention a statement by the American Association for the Advancement of Science that described an "intensification of droughts, heatwaves, floods, wildfires and severe storms" as "early warning signs of yet more devastating damage to come".
He said he did not disagree with any of this, but thought the AAAS should have made it clear what could be justified by the scientific evidence and what was based on judgement. He pointed out that he and his colleague were not experts on climate change.

The risk of disastrous climate change makes us worry not just for ourselves, but for others; for animals and plants, too. What's really cheering about climate change anxiety is that it's about the deep future, a place the Bomb managed to obliterate without a single missile leaving its silo. This time, our fear means something because we can act on it.

White House Seeks to Cut Geothermal Research Funds
By Bernie Woodall

Tuesday 13 March 2007
The Bush administration wants to eliminate federal support for geothermal power just as many U.S. states are looking to cut greenhouse gas emissions and raise renewable power output.
The move has angered scientists who say there is enough hot water underground to meet all U.S. electricity needs without greenhouse gas emissions.
"The Department of Energy has not requested funds for geothermal research in our fiscal-year 2008 budget," said Christina Kielich, a spokeswoman for the Department of Energy. "Geothermal is a mature technology. Our focus is on breakthrough energy research and development."
The administration of George W. Bush has made renewable energy a priority as it seeks to wean the United States off foreign oil, but it emphasizes use of biofuels like ethanol and biodiesel for vehicles and nuclear research for electricity.
"In spite of its enormous potential, the geothermal option for the United States has been largely ignored," a recent study led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology said.
Last year, the DOE requested no funding for geothermal for the 2007 fiscal year, after funding averaged about $26 million over the previous six years, but Congress restored $5 million. This year, the DOE's $24.3 billion budget request includes a 38 percent federal spending increase for nuclear power, but nothing for geothermal.
Advocates say they hope Congress can restore at least $25 million in funding to keep geothermal research on track.
"It's too early to pick our resources. We need them all," said Karl Gawell, executive director of the Geothermal Energy Association.
New geothermal power projects by 2050 could provide 100,000 megawatts of electricity - enough to power about 80 million U.S. homes, or as much as U.S. nuclear power plants make today, the MIT study said.
But U.S. geothermal development will need $300 million to $400 million over 15 years to make this type of power competitive versus other forms of power generation, the study said.
The big hurdle for geothermal power is finding out where the hot water is and developing better ways to drill for it. Geothermal power plants use steam or water from underground to turn turbines to create electricity.
Recreational hot springs across the United States are examples of where geothermal is easy to access. To be a viable power generator, hot water a mile or more underground has to be developed, said Gawell of the Geothermal Energy Association.
Leland "Roy" Mink, who until last October was geothermal program director at the DOE, said he thinks the White House's waning interest in geothermal is a mistake. He said he left the DOE when he saw the Department was cutting funding.
"It's far from a mature technology," said Mink, who is now working on a geothermal project in Idaho. "There's a lot to do. For starters, we need to develop drill bits that last longer. It's a hostile environment down there."
While its industry is largely undeveloped, the United States is still the largest producer of geothermal electricity in the world. U.S. geothermal power generation in 2005 was 0.36 percent of national power generation and geothermal capacity is rated at 2,828 megawatts, with almost all in California, according to the Geothermal Energy Association.
The Canadian government will be giving up to $2000 per car as an incentive to buy the most fuel efficient models, and will be penalizing gas guzzlers (such as Hummer drivers) up to $4000 per car. There is a similar incentive in my province (Ontario) to buy fuel efficient new cars, so there is now an $8000 spread between fuel saving and fuel wasting new vehicles being purchased. For many car buyers, this will be easily enough to encourage them to do the right thing.
