I Declare Hurricane Season Unofficially Over!
Posted by: 69Viking, 08:33 PM GMT del 28 Luglio 2008 +0
Hmm, nice to have a few visitors since the Hurricane unofficially came to a close in my area when the water temps dipped below 80!

I guess you can say I've been hiding. This time of the year I get ready for hunting season and spend a lot of time in the woods trying to fill the freezer with some deer meat!

For the most part when I'm deer hunting I spend a lot of time observing the beauty of nature. If you've never tried it and love the outdoors you should sit in a forest one morning about an hour before sunrise. The forest then is completely quiet except for maybe the breeze blowing. As daylight starts to move over the forest it slowly comes alive with the sounds of nature; birds chirping, squirrels jumping from tree to tree, woodpeckers hammering, chipmunks running across the forest floor, turkeys pecking the ground, or an armadillo meandering along. It's my favorite time of the day when I'm hunting. Even if I don't see a deer I always enjoy the experience.

Ok, these pictures are from this summer but show some of the things I observe in nature on the beach! I'll try to get some more current pictures soon! Thanks for stopping by everyone, I'll try and do better at keeping it more up to date!

Too close during Hurricane season. My boat is parked at our community dock. My house isn't right on the water, it's across the street from the water front houses, no more than about 200 yards from the water none the less. That water way is Santa Rosa Sound, the barrier island Santa Rosa Island is between there and the GOM. The water still rises considerably through the GOM passes during tropical systems. I'm halfway between the pass in Destin and the pass in Pensacola.

Great boat! Best of all it's in the water already. I'm sitting at a landlocked assignment wishing I were out on the water.

Viking,

Nive Avatar. Are you a Vikes fan or originally from MN? I live in Mpls. I am generally a lurker as I use this site for info on hurricanes in regards to N. gas prices. But your Avatar always peaks my interest.

Yes I am a Minnesota native born in Winona, MN and a diehard MN Vikings fan! I grew up in a small town outside of Rochester, MN in the Southeast part of the state. Love it there but can't stand the cold winter weather so when the Air Force sent me to Florida I separated and stayed, love the weather here and the beauty of the water and pure white sand that at times drifts just like snow!

Winona is beautiful but I can't blame you for living in FL. My inlaws have a place in Palm Beach and my parents winter in Destin so my wife and kids (and myself to a lesser degree) get to get out of the freezer for a bit when it gets brutal. HUGE Vikes fan also. I'm psyched for this season with Allen on D and AD on O. Of course they will find a way to break our hearts so it will be interesting in the way they go about disappointing us.

Couldn't tell from your boat picture where on the Sound you are. We are in Seal's Head Cove off Cinco Bayou. Where do you usually anchor at Crab Island? We will make a run there this weekend with friends who are visiting from Buffalo. Went by weekend before last, but there was an amazing amount of giant jellyfish, so we did not linger.

Spent yesterday at Crab Island.... Looked for you, thought maybe I saw your boat. Not sure, but it was a blue hull on S. side near the music. Gorgeous day!

Yep that was me! Was a great weekend on the water! So what does your boat look like again? I swear, with so many people on this site from the Emerald Coast I'm going to meet somebody from this site one day!

Hello fellow emerald coastie! Daughter just drove across the island. She said they were turning back traffic at Beasley now. She got through from Destin, but said water was creeping into the westbound lanes now. She will most likely have to go through Niceville this eve to get home tonight ala the weeks after Ivan. Hope you are not in a low lying area. Ike is one bad boy!

Hey, thanks for stopping by! Got the pics up now, wow, IKE's storm surge is way higher than Gustav's and Gustav actually passed closer to us. Just goes to show you what affect a larger slower moving storm can have.

Just saw your pics. WOW! Waiting on Beachfoxx to call now, and then gonna head that way to see. I have shots of Gustav as well that just amazed me. Daughter doesn't normally get too excited. She loves watching, but this one has her really uptight, even knowing that it will not affect us. She is worried for others in the path. I'll be the one with the TB Buc's hat on at the beach with camera if you're there! Thinking I will go to the Back Porch area beach.

Are you in Ft. Walton or Navarre? We are in Biscayne Pt. across from the new Wal-Mart. Surge is incredible.

I'm 6 miles east of Navarre in Mary Esther, the western suburb of Fort Walton Beach. I'll have more pics soon as I'm going home for lunch which will be very close to high tide time at my house.

Viking... great pics. I have some I need to post. Look very similar to yours except I am on Rocky Bayou, 5 miles north of Destin's East Pass! Amazing how Ike has "moved" the waters around!

Will send you email re: boat. Rather not post info here. : )

Hey Viking! We are still in Austin, not sure if we have power yet at home. The Texas A&M Galveston campus is jacked up so I'm not sure what they are planning for us the rest of the semester.

I'll be around... updates on my blog. Later.

Viking...

Still lots of standing water on OK Island this morning.... Luckily the roadway seems to have had no damage. Would hate to have a situation like we did in 1995 after Opal. People having to take shuttle boats across from Destin/Ft.Walton to get to & from work.

Me, I vote NO MORE STORMS for 2008!

I know, I saw that over the weekend! It seems the water washed over and then left ponds/lakes that will take a while to dry up. Pretty amazing how high the water got here. I will second your vote for no more storms AND a break from this 90 degree heat! It's mid September, lets enjoy some cooler fall weather!

Hey Viking,
Thanks for dropping by.
What's a Viking fan doing in hurricane country?
Ya I know, Minnesotans love the water, but it looks like you have gotten more than your share.
Me, I prefer the snow and cold of Winter here in Minnesota. I have relatives in Florida (someplace). My name sake uncle used to have a farm down there.

Hello from your MN Native living in Sunny Florida! Our forecast for Thanksgiving is Sunny and 72! Thanks for stopping by my area MNTornado, I'll stick to my warm Florida weather! 19 years of MN snow, cold and ice was enough for me! Found Florida in 1992 and plan on staying here with the occasional visit back to the home state during the warmer months! LOL! Stay warm!

Au shucks, and here I thought I that I could talk you back to the land of the frozen tundra. LOL

Seriously I'm beginning to understand why some folks have Winter homes in the South and Summer homes in the North. Too rich for my blood though.

I wish a very Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

Count your blessings instead of your crosses; Count your gains instead of your losses.

Count your joys instead of your woes; Count your friends instead of your foes.

Count your smiles instead of your tears; Count your courage instead of your fears.

Count your full years instead of your lean; Count your kind deeds instead of your mean.

Count your health instead of your wealth; Count on God instead of yourself.
